Prokofiev: Violin Concertos 1 & 2, etc / Shaham, Prévin
Artist(s): Gil Shaham (violin)
Conductor: André Previn
Orchestra/Ensemble: London Symphony Orchestra
Catalog Num: Deutsche Grammophon 47758

Every once in a long while a recording comes along and causes one to re-think all previous recordings of a beloved work. This is the case with Gil Shaham's recording of Prokofiev's First and Second Violin Concertos. Shaham is considered among the greatest young violinists playing today and is noted for his sweet, lyrical tone. This suits the First and Second Concertos perfectly. However, Shaham also brings intelligent tempo and phrasing to the work, as well as bursts of power when needed.     [Sugi Sorensen]

Prokofiev, Shostakovich: Violin Concertos no 1 / Rostropovich, Vengerov
Artist(s): Maxim Vengerov (violin)
Conductor: Mstislav Rostropovich
Orchestra/Ensemble: London Symphony Orchestra
Catalog Num: Atlantic/Teldec 92256

Maxim Vengerov recorded the First Concerto (paired with the Shostakovich Concerto) the same year (1995) that Gil Shaham made his landmark recording of the Prokofiev Concertos. 1995 was a very good year for Prokofiev's violin music. Vengerov's recording won Gramophone's Record of the Year honor, as well as a Grammy nomination. Vengerov is more well known for his virtuosic abilities, which might not suggest a good match to Prokofiev's First. But the results are stunning. Uncharacteristically (and wisely), Vengerov is measured in his approach, and the results are deeply probing and emotionally devastating. Vengerov seems to have learned much from Oistrakh as well. Shaham eclipes him in the first and second movements, but Vengerov excels in the third movement, building to an epic conclusion. Rostropovich is superb as accompanist, showing he too has matured in his approach to this most beautiful of Prokofiev's concertos. The Shostakovich is even better than the Prokofiev. This is a brilliant, sublime recording that confirms Vengerov as more than merely a master-technician.     [Sugi Sorensen]

Prokofiev: The Violin Concertos / Mintz / Abbado
Artist(s): Schlomo Mintz (violin)
Conductor: Claudio Abbado
Orchestra/Ensemble: Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Catalog Num: Deutsche Grammophon 410524

Shlomo Mintz has made himself a household name when it comes to Prokofiev. His celebrated recording of the sonatas has been highly praised for his deep understanding of the Prokofiev idiom, and that winning formula is to be heard in abundance in these concertos. Here, he captures the mood so perfectly in the opening and closing pages of the first movement of the first concerto - wistful, mysterious and atmospheric. The hushed moments are magical, enchanting and spellbinding. Climaxes are built with such supreme confidence (not overwhelming like Perlman on EMI) and the second movement is brilliant. His phrasing is imaginative and full of mercurial fantasy, and the freshness and charm with which he presents this work is irresistible. Abbado and the Chicago Symphony are more than attuned to their fine soloist's way with the music, and they provide excellent support. The No.2 is very fine too, though a little less distinctive, but still full of panache in the finale. The digital recording is one of the best to have emerged from DG, with full of bloom and space around the orchestra which suits the musicians' approach.

[Editor's Note: This disc was re-released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1999 as DGG 445607]     [Lionel Choi]

Stravinsky, Prokofiev: Violin Concertos / Lin, Salonen
Artist(s): Cho-Liang Lin (violin)
Conductor: Esa-Pekka Salonen
Orchestra/Ensemble: Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra
Catalog Num: Sony Classical 53969

The best part of Lin's CD has to be his dazzling account of the second concerto. It is easily one of the best accounts ever made. He combines the lyrical finesse of Kyung Wha Chung and the power of Perlman and Heifetz to give a truly satisfying performance, swaggering and spiky in the final movement, direct, firm and lyrical in the first two. The most amazing thing about Lin's playing is his ability to maintain perfect intonation throughout the work. He fares very well in the first concerto too, though he does not displace Mintz here, whose account is very special. (In fact, beside Mintz, Lin's opening movement sounds rather too direct and literal.) Esa-Pekka Salonen, a very fine interpreter of Prokofiev's music, shines here and lends sympathetic support, with many imaginative touches here and there, though the Los Angeles players are a little less stylish when compared to the Chicago members. The recording is excellent, with every orchestral detail picked up by the microphones. (This CD is coupled with the Stravinsky Violin Concerto, which unfortunately, does not receive a performance in the same class as the Prokofiev, though it is still excellent by any standards.)

A word about other versions. Kyung Wha Chung's account on Decca emphasises the lyrical aspects of the concerto, but for all that, she and Previn do not, rather surprisingly, cast that same spell on the listener as Mintz and Abbado do, and some might find her bordering on reticence. Perlman (EMI) and Sitkovetsky (Virgin) suit those who are seeking, above all, pure adrenaline and excitement. Sitkovetsky however does somehow underplay the lyrical aspects of the piece, while Perlman's violin is balanced so closely that it becomes nauseatingly overwhelming. Heifetz (RCA) and Viktoria Mullova (Philips) both recorded the second concerto, and are pretty dazzling, though Lin remains preferable.

Maxim Vengerov made a popular, award-winning, and somewhat overrated recording of the First with Rostropovich conducting (Teldec). It is a spiky performance that would give much pleasure to those who want only spikiness. The magical lyrical qualities that Mintz brings out are almost totally missing here.     [Lionel Choi]
