Prokofiev.org is an Internet resource for anyone interested in the life and music of Sergei Prokofiev. Growth in the content and popularity of Prokofiev.org has steadily increased since its launch in 1999.

The organization behind Prokofiev.org has evolved along with the Internet. Unlike many open-source projects on the Internet, Prokofiev.org has most closely resembled a benevolent dictatorship since its creation. This is because Prokofiev.org was created entireley by one person -- Sugi Sorensen. It was inspired by and built on the work of earlier Internet Prokofiev pioneers, particularly Lionel Choi, Robert Cummings and Onno van Rijen. However, all writing, curatorship, programming, web hosting, and other resources needed to build and maintain the site were provided by Sugi and his Internet consulting company -- Allegro Media.

Once launched, Prokofiev.org evolved from a pure dicatorship into a more group-oriented effort, with additional content and management provided by individuals from around the world. Prokofiev.org readers contributed articles, photographs, and information about recordings. A staff was then created with Lionel, Robert, and Melvin Yap joining Sugi to help organize and grow the content of the site.

Subsequent to the site's launch, the Prokofiev family and the Serge Prokofiev Archive at Goldsmith's College (London) provided support in the way of photographs, written material, editorial comment, and other advice to greatly enhance the value of Prokofiev.org. In addition, the Prokofiev family provided invaluable financial support at a critical time when the continued existence of Prokofiev.org was in jeopardy.

Originally a non-profit endeavor, the existence of Prokofiev.org depended exclusively on funds donated by Sugi and Allegro Media. Solicitations for donations to help defray operating costs netted no additional funds. Clearly, the site's experimentation with Communitarianism as a viable form of website governance failed miserably. As a result, Sugi, himself an anarcho-capitalist, deferred to more historically tried-and-trued methods. Thus Prokofiev.org began running banner advertising and collecting commissions on the sale of CDs and sheet music through the site. For the most part, revenue from advertising and commissions has just barely covered operating costs.

If you would like to contribute any material to the site, please contact Sugi at sugi@prokofiev.org.
