Who is cemeterybird  Hi There... please do not think me too much of a Philistine but I am quite an ignoramus when it comes to most classical music. I just hear certain 'bits' of music and know what I like, but can hardly ever tell you who is playing and what the piece is called.

Anyway, back to the point..... I have heard this piece of music, now and then, mostly on television, radio, adverts and it's been driving me mad, not knowing who and what it was. A couple of people said they thought it was Khachaturian which sent me off on the wrong track but then I noticed that it was played on the advert for the Apprentice and through that, managed to track down that it was Prokofiev but there seems to be a difference to opinion... some say Romeo & Juliet Suite No. 2 and on another site it was called Dance of the Knights. Could anyone please clarify which one it is please and if possible, to let me know if any of you Prokofievians have managed to download any good ringtones for your mobile phones?? I would just love to hear that tune every time my phone rang!!

Thank you in advance.

Janet

Who is Lookingforscores  Hello. The cue "Dance of the Knights" belongs to one of Prokofiev's absolute masterpieces: the ballet "Romeo and Juliet". The composer, after having composed the ballet, selected some cues from it to make three suites (in different years) for concert performances (only orchestra, without dancers) and the cue "Dance of the Knights" is the most famous part of the second suite. If you want to discover Prokofiev, I really suggest you to buy the 2CDs of the complete ballet.

Who is cemeterybird  Thank you 'Lookingforscores'.... I realised, reading back my original posting that it must have sounded like I was 'only' interested in a tune for my mobile phone!! I am most interested in hearing more of Prokofievs music (I do have vague recollections of Peter and the Wolf being around quite a lot when I was a child). So you think as an introduction the complete Romeo and Juliet is a good choice - or is there a CD which has maybe, a selection of his most popular scores, which would be good for a novice?

Who is morgold  I think a few years ago Chandos put out a "sampler" CD for the 50th anniversary of Prokofiev's death--it contains (very) brief selections from about 15 works, and it only costs five dollars. It might be a good way to see how much Prokofiev really appeals to you.
