Fourth International Prokofiev Competition

7 - 21 April, 2003

St. Petersburg, Russia

The Sergei Prokofiev International Competition is one of the largest competitions in Russia, and will be organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and the government of St. Petersburg.

The Fourth International Competition will be held in St. Petersburg from 07-April to 21-April-2003.

The competition will cover three disciplines:

  • Symphonic Conducting - honored jury chairmen Yuri Temirkanov, jury chairman Alexander Dmitriev
  • Composition - jury chairman Rodion Schedrin
  • Piano - jury chairman Vladimir Krainev
Reviewing and performances by the winners will take place in concert halls in St. Petersburg:
  • Large Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic
  • Small Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic
  • Glazunov Concert Hall of the St. Petersburg Conservatory
  • Theatre of Opera and Ballet of the St. Petersburg Conservatory
Providing accompaniment during the competition, the following orchestras will take part:
  • Academic Symphonic Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philarmonic
  • Symphonic Orchestra Academic Capella of St. Petersburg
  • Symphonic Orchestra of the Theatre of Opera and Ballet St. Petersburg Conservatory
From among the musicians wishing to take part in the competition, the Organizing Committee will admit no more than 100 competitors. The winners will compete for prize money in the sum of USD 80,000.

It is estimated that the 35 concerts of the competition during the two weeks of competition will attract more than 15,000 music fans. The advertising company of the competition will provide regular information about the competition, TV and radio programs, publication in newspapers and magazines, press conferences with members of the jury, street advertising, edition of the poster, booklet, program notes, press-bulletins, and souvenirs.

The Fourth International Sergei Prokofiev Competition is dedicated to the 300 year anniversary of the city of St. Petersburg and is part of the cultural program of anniversary events.

RULES of Competition for the Disciplines of Symphonic Conducting and Piano

1. APPLICATIONS

The competition is open to pianists up to 30 years of age (i.e. born after 07-April-1973), and conductors up to 40 years of age (i.e. born after 07-April-1963).

Application documents shall include the following:
  1. Completed application form
  2. Photocopy of passport
  3. Photocopy of diploma or certificate of musical qualifications
  4. A short biographical note
  5. One portrait photo 10x15 cm and two portrait photos 3x4 cm, one of which is to be attached to the application form.
  6. A video recording, PAL-SECAM system, of the applicant performing a complete composition or a movement freely chosen by the performer and lasting from 15 to 30 minutes. The videocassette shall provide the following information: the applicant's full name, titles of the recorded pieces, and date of recording.
  7. Proof of entrance fee paid
The Organizing Committee shall notify all applicants of acceptance of applications by 01-January-2003.

The entrance fee of 100 US dollars shall be transferred into the settlement account of the Competition Management. The Russian applicants shall pay the entrance fee in rubles at the rate of the Central Bank of Russia.

2. COMPETITION PROCEDURE

2.1 The Organizing Committee shall select from among the applicants and decide upon their participation in the Competition on the basis of the documents and video recordings provided.

2.2 First prize winners of other international competitions -- members of the World Federation of International Music Competitions shall gain admittance to the Prokofiev Competition without pre-competition selection.

2.3 The Competition auditions will consist of three rounds held in public.

2.4 The number of Second Round participants shall not exceed 50% of the overall Competition participants.

A maximum of 6 contestants shall be admitted to the Third Round. In the finals, the pianists shall perform with a symphony orchestra. All works for piano shall be performed from memory.

2.5 The Third Round concerts are included in the program of the Fourth International Prokofiev Competition in the disciplines of: Orchestral Conducting, Piano, Composition from 07-April to 21-April2003.

2.6 The order of appearance shall be established by drawing of lots and remain unchanged until the end of the Competition.

2.7 The Jury is entitled to ask the contestant to cut down the program or to stop the performance if it does not meet the requirements, or if the result is obvious and the Jury unanimously agrees upon it.

2.8 The prize winners and diploma recipients shall be prepared to participate in the closing concerts of the Competition free of charge.

2.9 The Organizing Committee reserves the right to broadcast the Competition concerts and auditions over the radio and on TV as well as to make and distribute records, compact discs and videocassettes of the programs performed by the recipients of the first three prizes without additional honoraria paid to them.

3. PRIZES

3.1 The Organizing Committee of the Fourth International Prokofiev Competition offers the following prizes for pianists and symphonic conductors:

First Prize - 10,000 US dollars
Second Prize - 7,000 US dollars
Third Prize - 3,000 US dollars
Three consolation prizes of 1,000 US dollars each.
3.2 The Jury has the right to not award all the prizes declared, to divide the prizes between the third-stage contestants, and to introduce two second or two third prizes in case of a decision not to grant the first or the second prizes respectively.

3.3 The Organizing Committee and the Jury have the right to grant special prizes and awards. The First Prize cannot be divided.

3.4 The decisions of the Jury are final and not subject to revision.

3.5 Prizes are paid in rubles at the rate of exchange on the date of payment.

3.6 The Organizing Committee shall reimburse accommodation expenses to the contestants for a period of their participation in the Competition.

To the contestants who have failed to qualify for the Second Round the Organizing Committee will pay for their accommodation until noon of the day following the day on which the results of the First Round are announced.

To the contestants who have failed to qualify for the Third Round the Organizing Committee will pay for their accommodation until noon of the day following the day on which the results of the Second Round are announced.

To the contestants who will participate in the Third Round the Organizing Committee will pay for their accommodation until noon of the day following the closing day of the Competition.

3.7 The contestants who have failed to qualify for the Second or Third Round can stay in St. Petersburg at their own expense.

3.8 The Organizing Committee will render assistance to persons accompanying the contestants in providing accommodation and board to them, help them to attend auditions and take part in the cultural program of the Competition at their own expense on condition of their preliminary agreement on the above with the Competition Management.


COMPETITION PROGRAM FOR ORCHESTRAL CONDUCTORS

FIRST ROUND

A contestant for the First Round performs and rehearses with orchestra parts or movements of two compositions for 30 minutes.

The first composition the participant chooses independently from List No.1 and specifies in his/her entry application.

  • The Second composition (fragments or parts) is randomly determined from List No.2 by the Organizing Committee on the day of performance.

    The second round consists of 60 minutes rehearsal and performance with an orchestra of two compositions.

  • The Second composition is randomly determined by the Organizing Committee (one day before performing in the Second Round):

    PROGRAM OF THE PIANO COMPETITION

    FIRST ROUND

    Maximum duration of performance is 60 minutes. The first stage will consist of two performances of contestants selected by the Jury.

    First performance:

    1. Prelude and Fugue chosen from the following list:

    D. Shostakovich: Prelude and Fugue from "24 Preludes and Fugues"
    S. Slonimski: Prelude and Fugue from "24 Preludes and Fugues"
    R. Schedrin: Prelude and Fugue from "24 Preludes and Fugues"
    2. A virtuoso composition by S. Prokofiev (Toccata, Op 11 or one work from Four Etudes, Op 2, except for No 2)
    3. Either an Etude-Tableau by S. Rachmaninov (Op 33, 39), or Etude-virtuoso by A. Scriabin (Op 8, 42, 65).
    4. Beethoven: One of the Sonatas (except No. 19, 20, 25)

    The Jury reserve the right to listen to one or two movements of the sonata.

    Second performance:

    5. Two virtuoso Etudes, one Etude either by F. Chopin (Op 10, 25) or F. Liszt, the other one by the composer mentioned above in item 3 and not performed during the first performance.
    6. A romantic piece freely chosen by the contestant (up to 12 min. in length)
    7. S. Prokofiev: Several pieces (10-15 min. in length) selected from the following:

    • Visions Fugitives, Op 22
    • Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet, Op 75
    • Any of the Cinderella cycles, Op 95, 97, 102
    • Sarcasms, Op 17
    • Tales of an Old Grandmother, Op 31
    • Four Pieces, Op 4

    SECOND ROUND

    Maximum duration of performance is 60 minutes.

    1. Prokofiev: One of the Piano Sonatas
    2. One of the following pieces chosen by the participant:

    • P. Tchaikovsky: Variations in F major, from Op 19
    • P. Tchaikovsky-M. Pletnev: Concert Suite from the ballet "Nutcracker"
    • M. Mussorgsky: "Pictures from an Exhibition"
    • M. Balakirev: "Islamey"
    • I. Stravinsky: Suite from ballet "Petrushka"
    • A. Scriabin: Fantasia, Op 28 or one of Sonatas (from No 1 to 10)
    • S. Rachmaninov: "Variations on Corelli's Theme", Sonata No 2
    • N. Medtner: "Sonata Reminiscenza" in A minor, Op 38 No 1
    Duration - not to exceed 60 minutes.

    3. One of the following compositions:

    • C. Debussy: "Images" Book 1 or 2, "Estampes", Suite "Bergamesque", Suite "Pour le piano", "Children's Corner"
    • M. Ravel: "Gaspard de la Nuit", "La Valse" solo piano transcription by the composer, "Le Tombeau de Couperin", "Miroirs", "Sonatine" for piano

    THIRD ROUND

    1. S. Prokofiev: One of the Concertos for Piano and Orchestra.

    2. A concerto for piano and orchestra of the contestant's free choice.
    Note: Contestants can obtain the required music from the Organizing Committee by filing an order.

    COMPETITION RULES FOR COMPOSERS

    1. APPLICATIONS

    1.1 The Fourth International Prokofiev Competition for composers will be held in Moscow and St. Petersburg: the First and the Second Rounds will take place in Moscow in December 2002 and the Third Round in St. Petersburg on 10-April-2003.

    1.2. The Competition envisages presentation of compositions written by composers for solo instruments only in one of the two following divisions:

    a) A composition (concerto, rhapsody, fantasia, etc.) for solo instrument and symphony orchestra;

    b) A composition of a larger form (sonata, variations, suite, etc.) for solo instrument or for solo instrument and piano.

    1.3. The Competition is open to all composers without any restrictions regarding their age and nationality. All works must be neither published, nor previously performed in public, nor awarded prizes.

    1.4. The Competition will be anonymous. When presenting compositions, composers shall choose a pseudonym and write it both on music submitted and over envelopes in which the documentation and music are sent.

    1.5. Applicants shall submit to the Organizing Committee the following:

    1. Scores of a presented composition in two copies (if it is a composition for instrument and symphony orchestra) or a clavier in two copies (in case it is a composition for solo instrument or for instrument and piano) bearing the chosen pseudonym.
    2. A sealed envelope containing the following information: composer's name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail, if any, a short biographical note and a portrait photograph 10x15 cm. On the envelope should only be written the chosen pseudonym.
    3. Proof of entrance fee paid. $100 US.

      2.6. Concerts of the Third Round are included in the overall program of the Fourth International Prokofiev Competition in Composition, Symphonic Conducting and Piano and will be held from 07 to 21-April-2003.

      2.7. The Organizing Committee shall cover accommodation expenses of the participants coming to St. Petersburg for the finals.

      3. PRIZES for COMPETITION of COMPOSERS:

      3.1. The following prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Competition in the division of compositions for solo instrument and orchestra:

      First Prize - USD 10,000
      Second Prize - USD 7,0000
      Third Prize - USD 3,0000
      Two diplomas and incentive prizes of 1,000 US dollars each.
      3.2 Works of large form for solo instrument or with piano accompaniment:
      First Prize - USD 5,0000
