Biography

Maxim Vengerov was born in Novosibirsk, in Wester Siberia, in 1974. He began playing violin at a young age, studying with Galina Turtschaninova and later Zahhar Bron. At age ten he won First Prize in the Junior Wieniawski Competition in Poland. Thereupon followed several recital engagements in Moscow in Leningrad. In 1989 at age fourteen, he made his debut in the West with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also played with the BBC Philharmonic and the USSR State Symphony, as well as recital debuts at Wigmore Hall, Suntory Hall, and the Mozarteum. In July 1990, Vengerov won First Prize at the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition, also picking up the audience prize and a special prize for interpretation. In 1990 he moved to Tel Aviv, Israel.

Known for his fiery, flawless technique, Vengerov has played with most of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Isreali Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus.

In addition to his concert tours, Vengerov has recorded over a dozen albums. He records exclusively for Atlantic/Teldec. His recordings have won critical praise, along with a host of awards. In 1994, Gramophone Magazine named him Best Young Artist. In 1997, he was named an Honorary Envoy for Music by the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF.) Vengerov currently lives in Amsterdam, playing the "ex Kiesewetter" Stradivarius (circa 1723).

Vengerov and Prokofiev

Vengerov is a formidable virtuoso violinist and has tackled all of the difficult violin concertos in the standard repetoire with great success. In 1995, he recorded Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto along with Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra. The album won 'Record of the Year' honors by Gramophone Magazine, a Grammy Nomination for best 'Classical Album', as well as an Edison Award. Following on the success of this recording, Vengerov returned to record the Prokofiev and Shostakovich Second Violin Concertos in 1997. This album also won an Edison Award.
