Biography

Born in Tallinn, Estonia, Neeme Järvi began his formal music training at the Tallinn Music School after studying percussion and choral conducting with his brother Vallo. He them studied with Evgeny Mravinsky and Nikolai Rabinovich at the Leningrad Music Conservatory. He became music director of the Estonian Radio Orchestra in 1963. That same year, he founded the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. In 1966 he moved to become principal conducto of the Tallinn Opera where he remained until 1979. In 1976 he assumed conducting responsibilities of the newly-founded Estonian Symphony Orchestra as well. He becamse principal conductor of the National Orchestra of Sweden in Gothenburg in 1982. In 1984 he began his now-famous residence with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra where he remained until 1988. He remains conductor laureate of the RSNO to this day. In 1989, he came to the United States and assumed the baton of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra where he remains music director. Järvi is also chief guest conductor of the Japan Philharmonic.

He has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, the Orchestra di Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the symphony orchestras of Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. In the United Status he appears annually with major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony.

Jarvi and Prokofiev

Järvi has long held a special interest in the music of Prokofiev, beginning with his recording of the Sixth Symphony with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 1984. He has recorded most of Prokofiev's work with the RSNO, the Royal Philharmonia, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestras on the Chandos record label including the complete Symphonies and all of the concertos. His interpretation of Prokofiev is widely acclaimed by critics and the public alike.

The peak of Jarvi's instinctive understanding of Prokofiev can be found in his magical recordings of the Sixth Symphony, particularly the final movement, and the Third Symphony with the RSNO.
