Claudio Abbado was born in Milan in 1933, the son of a violinist, father Michelangelo Abbado. He first took up the piano at a young age. He entered the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan at age sixteen where he studied piano, composition and conducting. He left the Verdi Conservatory in 1955 and attended the Chigiana Academy of Siena, and later the Vienna Academy of Music until 1957, studying conducting with Hans Swarowsky. In 1958, he entered and won the Sergei Koussevitsky Conducting Prize at the Tanglewood Festival in the United States. Following his win, he taught chamber music at the music conservatory in Parma, Italy. In 1960 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala (a.k.a. 'La Scala') in Milan. He was music director of La Scala from 1968 to 1986. In 1963 he won the Mitropoulos conducting competition in New York.Abbado first conducted the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival in 1965. He was later appointed guest conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1971. In the same year, he also received the Mozart medal of the Vienna Mozart community. He took over as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1979 and served as its head until 1988. In 1982, he founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of La Scala. He served as Music Director of the Vienna State Opera from 1986 to 1991. Abbado currently heads the Berlin Philharmonic, which he first conducted in in 1966. He was appointed principal conductor and artistic director of the BPO in 1989. Widely recognized as one of today's greatest conductors, Abbado has won numerous awards, including the Legion of Honor from the French Ministry of Culture; the Gran Croce, Italy's highest honor; and the Bundesverdienstkreuz, Germany's highest civilian honor. The Vienna Philharmonic awarded him their Ring of Honor in 1973, and the Golden Nicolai Medal in 1980. In 1985 he received the Gold Medal of the International Gustav Mahler Society in recognition of his service to the music of Gustav Mahler. He is an honorary member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and has received honorary degrees from the universities of Cambridge, Aberdeen and Ferrara. In 1994 Claudio Abbado was awarded the International Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, Germany's most prestigious music award.
Abbado and Prokofiev
Abbado is less a specialist of Prokofiev than a phenomenal conductor with a tremendous range. He has also recorded a great number of Prokofiev's works, including many minor orchestral and chamber works. In this regard, he has distinguished himself from other great conductors who have recorded Prokofiev. Many of his recordings of Prokofiev have earned meritorious distinction from listeners and music critics alike. Most regarded are his pairings with pianists Martha Argerich and Evgeny Kissin on the Piano Concerto No. 3.
